A campaign to promote the benefits of walking has been backed by MP Sir Alan Beith.
The Berwick Member recently attended a reception in Parliament held by The Ramblers to discuss how politicians can push walking up the agenda for the next General Election.
The Ramblers is calling on the Government to help promote an active, healthy lifestyle, protect the places where people walk and improve access to the outdoors.
Sir Alan said: “The coast and countryside of Northumberland offers people some wonderful walking opportunities, but there are also fascinating walks exploring our market towns and villages, and just walking instead of using the car on a short trip for a change can help people’s fitness.
“Walking is a really beneficial activity, but it is sometimes overlooked and many of the benefits are not being fully realised.
“The next government must work to rectify this and fully exploit the value of walking across departments. As my party develops its manifesto for next year’s General Election I will be working with colleagues to ensure we include policies which fully embrace the benefits that walking can offer.”
