New culvert will reduce risk of local flooding

A CULVERT which runs through Carlisle Park in Morpeth is to be replaced to reduce the risk of flooding to nearby properties.

The Environment Agency is taking out 30 metres of the Postern Burn system, from the eastern end of Postern Woods through the Formal Gardens, and installing new piping in its place.

The existing facility is in poor condition and has become prone to internal blockages, increasing the risk of localised flooding.

A new, larger trash screen will also be installed at the end of the open section of the burn to enable debris to be cleared safely during periods of high water flow.

The replacement will take about eight weeks. Pedestrian access to the gardens will remain open, although an area around the works will be fenced off. The footpath from the Formal Gardens to the Postern Burn will be closed during the works.
