A gala evening is to be held in Morpeth to present awards to businesses and the people who work for them in the centre of the town.

The Heart of Morpeth Business Awards 2016 will take place for the first time in October. Entries are now open in the seven different categories.

Organised by Morpeth Town Team in partnership with the Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade and Sanderson Arcade, the event’s main sponsor is Cookswell of Pegswood.

The accolades will recognise excellence in the business, service, leisure, hospitality and professional services sectors of the town centre, which is defined by the organisers as Newgate Street, Bridge Street, Oldgate, Newmarket, Manchester Street, Sanderson Arcade, Castle Square. Wellway and Dark Lane.

Everyone in businesses in that area – from sole traders to national chains – can enter.

The award categories have been defined as Business Manager, Young Achiever, Customer Service Team, Independent Retailer, Community Engagement and Project Award and Retailer of the Year.

An Emily Wilding Davison award, sponsored by her Australian relative Geoffrey Davison, will also be presented to Morpeth’s Businesswoman of the Year.

Jacky Beesley, Morpeth Chamber of Trade chairman, said: “It is right and proper that the best of our local businesses, and the people who work for them, should be recognised and celebrated for their achievements and that’s exactly what our awards will do.”

One winner that will be presented with its award on the evening will be The Chocolate Gallery. It has already been announced as the successful business in a window dressing competition in association with Morpeth Town FC’s victory in the FA Vase at Wembley.

Entrants can be nominated for the categories using entry forms that can be downloaded from the moreinmorpeth website or are available from Lumley House in Sanderson Arcade.

Completed entries must be returned to the organisers by Monday, September 5.

Other sponsors are Inside Morpeth, ThruYorDoor Delivery, WCRS, The Flag Man, Global Radio, Beach Design, Taylor Wimpey and Morpeth Town Team.
