THE traditional New Year Morpeth Hunt will meet at a different location this time round.

Usually about 200 people turn out to watch the hunt set off from New Market in Morpeth town centre, but this year the calendar means a shift in location.

As New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, the hunt will take place on Monday, January 2. But more businesses are likely to be open, so to avoid causing too much disruption, the riders and hounds will instead set off from Pigdon.

Members of the public are, as always, welcome to go along for the start of the hunt to meet the horses and hounds.

Joint Master of the Hunt Valerie Jackson said: “Last year when we met in New Market we were asked to apply for a road closure, which just wouldn’t be sensible this year because there is going to be a far greater volume of traffic in the town than there would be on New Year’s Day when the shops are closed.

“This situation happens every so often when New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday.

“We get fantastic support from the people of the town so we are keen to let them know that the hunt is going ahead, but this year it will be at Pigdon on January 2.

“We would hope to have somewhere in the region of 30 to 40 horses turning out, and the children are really keen to get close to the hounds and stroke them so we want that to continue.

“Hopefully, we will be back in Morpeth in 2013.”

The riders will meet at 10.45am to set off at 11am.

This event follows the Boxing Day hunt, which set off from outside The Dyke Neuk Inn, Meldon. It was very well attended both by riders and spectators.
