MORPETH newlyweds were keeping it local as the bride returned to her roots.

Dr Amy Lindley returned to her home town on Saturday to walk down the aisle of her childhood church and tie the knot with science teacher Peter Oldham.

Amy was brought up in Morpeth, attending St Robert’s RC First School, St Benedicts Middle and St Benet Biscop High, but left the town when she became the first student from the high school to take a place at Cambridge University to study medicine.

She used to run with Morpeth Harriers and still holds the sprint record at St Benedicts.

Her sporting interest continued at university, where she captained the women’s rowing team at Peterhouse College and led it to its best ever results.

Since qualifying as a doctor in July, Amy has been working at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.

However, when it came to her wedding there was only one place in the running.

Amy and Peter, who met when he was her rowing coach, were married at St Robert’s Church in Oldgate, and held a reception in the Town Hall.

The happy couple were determined to support Northumbrian businesses on their big day. Wylam Brewery provided the ale, King’s Catering served the meal, Cafe des Amis provided afternoon tea and the ceilidh band was Jim Smith’s from Berwick.

The couple hope to move to Northumberland when Amy’s two-year hospital foundation is finished. Peter, who is originally from Bath, plans to compete in triathlons in the county.

The bride’s parents are Ian and Linda Lindley, and the groom’s are Jill and Charles Oldham.
