The northbound A1 was closed near Alnwick, while the westbound A69 was closed near Heddon-on-the-Wall.

Northumbria Police said both were serious collisions.

The first crash happened on the A1 around 6.20pm near the Whittingham turn-off. A car had earlier been reported heading the wrong way down the A1 northbound carriageway.

Eyewitnesses who were caught in the queue reported several emergency vehicles in attendance, including at least three fire engines, two ambulances and three police cars. Fire crews appeared to be using cutting gear on one of the cars. Police officers put diversions in place, then cleared the backed-up traffic, telling motorists there had been ‘a very serious accident’.

The road eventually reopened shortly before midnight.

No further details of the collision have been released yet.

The second collision, on the A69, happened around 1am.

Police closed the road between the A6085 and A68, with traffic diverted via the Military Rd/A68.

The road reopened early on Sunday morning but no further details have been released.
