Nothing rubbish about this present

A little boy who is obsessed with bin lorries had a birthday to remember, after a wagon paid him a special visit.

Rowan Nicholson, who lives in Pegswood, could not believe his eyes when the lorry stopped outside his house to honour his third birthday earlier this month.

The perfect present was arranged by Sarah Carrick at Northumberland County Council after mum Sarah rang the authority to see if anything could be done to mark his birthday.

Mum Sarah, 30, said: “It was very special for him, because he is bin-lorry obsessed – he loves them. Every time they go past he rushes to the window to see them. He has a number of bin-lorry toys and thanks to this, his toys came to life.

“He didn’t know anything about it, but he was over the moon when the lorry pulled up outside the house. He spoke to the drivers and they gave him some gifts.”

Paul Jones, head of neighbourhood services at the county council, said: “Our refuse collectors take real pride in the service they provide to residents.

“As they were already visiting the property that day to empty the bins, it was no trouble to help make his birthday that extra bit special – especially given that he is such a big fan.”
