NORTHUMBERLAND holidaymakers will benefit from significantly reduced mobile phone charges, thanks to new EU rules.
Price caps of 23p a minute to make a call and 7p to send a message came into effect on Sunday, reducing the cost of keeping in touch while travelling.
For the first time, there will also be a cap on the cost of using mobile data while abroad. Networks will be able to charge no more than 56p a megabyte.
North East Euro MP Fiona Hall, the Lib Dem’s European industry spokesperson, said: “With the mobile phone industry desperate to maintain their outrageous prices for as long as possible, MEPs and EU Member States have rightly stepped in to ensure that customers get a fair deal.”
