The Environment Agency has released pictures of a build-up of debris at the new dam on the Mitford Estate earlier this month following an extended period of heavy rain.

It was caught by the trash screens at the upstream facility, which is part of the Morpeth Flood Alleviation Scheme.

An operations team went out to the dam to clear the debris so that the river could flow freely.

An Environment Agency spokeswoman said: “The screens catch large amounts of debris to prevent it from washing down stream into the town during high river levels, which could ultimately restrict the flow of the river and potentially be a flood risk.”
