THE managing director of Northeast Press (NEP) – owner of the Morpeth Herald – has taken up a new role within Johnston Press.

Stuart Birkett, who has been with NEP for seven years, was appointed managing director of Johnston Press’s Scottish publishing unit last week and started his new role on Monday.

The announcement was made by Johnston Press chief executive Ashley Highfield as part of a senior management shake-up.

Mr Birkett said: “I am incredibly proud of both the consistently ‘better than the rest’ results we’ve delivered in the North East and privileged to work with such a great team.”

He was replaced at NEP by Stephen Plews, formerly MD of the JP North and East Yorkshire Publishing Unit.
