A HUSBAND and wife team have retired after running a Ponteland pharmacy for more than 15 years, writes Muriel Sobo.

Peter and Pam Hopley have worked hard to run the business, satisfy their customers and keep residents healthy.

The business in Brewery Lane has been taken over by Jessica Taylor, who worked there originally as a Saturday girl when she was a pupil at Ponteland High School.

The couple met many years ago when they were both studying pharmacy at the University of Aston in Birmingham.

Peter took up posts in London and then he moved to Newcastle to take on the position of Pharmaceutical Officer for the Health Authority, but later re-organisation of the health service led to another change of direction.

At that time they heard that the Moss the Chemists shop in the village was available and they were able to take it over.

Peter said he had always enjoyed pharmacy work both in the hospital and in the community because of the importance of being involved in the supply and management of medicines.

He added that village pharmacies rely on decent support from their communities as they have great competition from the big chains and supermarkets, and often little support from within the local NHS.

Mr and Mrs Hopley thanked all those who have supported them.
