A husband and wife from Morpeth had a personal reason to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support by taking part in a half marathon.

Adam and Jessica Savage did the Great North Run in honour of Jessica’s mum Lesley Mantel, a well-known Morpeth businesswoman.

She died at home after a short illness on August 31. The family have thanked all those who have paid tributes and condolences.

Mrs Mantel was best known for owning and running the Sour Grapes pub for about 20 years. She also ran an acclaimed B&B at Lansdown House in Newgate Street.

After announcing earlier this year that they were going to do the 13.1-mile run from Newcastle to South Shields, Mr and Mrs Savage received a lot of support for their fund-raising. Mrs Mantel’s funeral took place the day afterwards.

About £4,500 has been brought in for the charity through online donations and collection buckets at Morpeth Rugby Club and the Northumberland Arms in Felton.

Mrs Savage said: “The amount of well wishes, messages of condolence and flowers after my mother died was totally overwhelming and they are very much appreciated by the family.

“It was the first time that we had done the Great North Run and it was great to be part of such a fantastic atmosphere.

“We were close to pulling out through injuries, but given the circumstances we decided that we were going to take part even if we had to walk some of the way. In the end, we both ran the course and we were pleased with how well we did.

“The whole family would like to thank everyone for their donations and support.”
