Northumbria Police has launched its latest recruitment drive for the next new intake of volunteer police cadets.

The force is looking to recruit more than 100 cadets at six locations, starting in December. The aim is to inspire young people to participate positively in their communities and help them to develop future employment skills.

They will also have the opportunity to gain a practical understanding of policing and achieve a Duke of Edinburgh award.

The scheme was first introduced into the Northumbria Police area five years ago and this latest intake will increase the number of volunteer cadets to nearly 400 taking part in activities across the force area.

They have been instrumental in helping at events such as the Great North Run, Sunderland Air Show and both Newcastle and Sunderland Pride.

To apply for the four-year volunteer scheme, candidates must be aged 14 or 15, live in the force area and be up for a challenge.

Cadet schemes will run in Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Sergeant Alan Parks, volunteer cadet coordinator, said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to engage with Northumbria Police and become a volunteer within their community.

“The volunteer cadets have had some exciting challenges and taken part in a range of activities from social action to team building, providing public reassurance with officers at events to patrolling on a night shift.

“Already the cadets have been fantastic in supporting our officers at some of the biggest events in our region and this is the opportunity for more youngsters to play their part.

“We’re really pleased to be able to recruit more and would urge anyone who is interested and would like more information to either call 101 or have a look on the Northumbria Police website.”

Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Vera Baird said: “I am fully supportive of the cadet scheme and our current volunteers are a real credit to the force.

“This is a great opportunity for members of our local communities to get involved with policing our region and help make Tyne and Wear a better place to live.”

You will be able to apply from 5pm this afternoon, with the closing date for applications on October 16. To obtain an application form, visit the police website or call 101 ext 64111.
