A NORTHUMBERLAND MP is hosting an event which aims to help community groups and volunteers play a strong role in a Government programme.
The Big Society Summit is for all of Hexham MP Guy Opperman’s constituency, which includes Ponteland, Belsay and Stannington.
This agenda will be discussed by more than 150 representatives from business, faith groups, voluntary organisations, local politicians and health and environmental groups.
The day will kick off with a keynote speech from Mr Opperman, featuring a report back on his recent Big Society Tour of the constituency.
Participants will be able to directly question a range of guests, including the county council’s Chief Executive, on the opportunities ahead for the third sector to play a central role in procurement and delivery of services.
The event will also see examples of project best practice shared between the various sectors where local groups have made a difference to their communities.
There will also be discussions on a plan of action taking forward ideas of further co-operation between existing groups and volunteers, possibly with the view to forming a local co-operative or public interest company.
Chaired by Anne Moyle, Chair of the Milecastle Housing Association, the summit is being held tomorrow at The Queen’s Hall, Hexham, from 10am to 3.30pm (registration from 9.30am).
