A DECISION to call for a major cost-saving measure in the EU budget has been welcomed by a North East MEP.
A vote was taken among MEPs about backing the campaign for a single seat for the European Parliament in Brussels. It was passed by 353 to 282.
Fiona Hall MEP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament, said: “Legally, the decision to have a single seat for the European Parliament needs to be taken by national governments. But the European Parliament has now given national leaders the signal they have asked for. We are calling for major cost savings in the EU budget and the campaign to scrap the Strasbourg Parliament is a key element of this.Scrapping the Strasbourg seat alone could save over £180million a year.”
