A NORTHUMBERLAND MP has made it onto a list of talented people.
The Institute of Public Policy Research North (ippr north) has named its top 50 ‘ones to watch’ across a range of sectors and it includes Hexham MP Guy Opperman.
Also among the Northern Lights list are young entrepreneurs, academics, writers, councillors, community activists, business leaders and performers.
Mr Opperman, whose constituency includes Ponteland, Belsay and Stannington, has been determined to see the region play a leading role in the ‘Big Society’ agenda since he was elected at the 2010 General Election.
He has established his own internship programme, offering local young people work experience in his office and the opportunity to break into politics and policy making.
His blog has already won a Top MP’s Blog award by the Total Politics magazine.
Director of ippr north Ed Cox said: “Our Northern Lights list shines the spotlight on upcoming stars, from politics to poetry.
“We want to celebrate the best and boldest and shirk any notion of it being grim up north. We think the north should be leading, not pleading, its way to renewed prosperity and so we must develop and hold on to the talented individuals who can lead the northern renaissance.”
