MP welcomes energy cost inquiry

AN investigation into rising energy prices has been welcomed by MP Sir Alan Beith.

The Berwick Member, whose constituency stretches to the north of Morpeth, wrote to energy regulator OFGEM earlier this month asking for an investigation into price increases by Scottish Power.

The company says that domestic gas prices will rise by 19 percent and electricity bills will go up 10 per cent from August, blaming a rise in wholesale energy costs and the volatility of global markets.

Now OFGEM has announced that it will investigate the matter, with the potential of referring it to the Competition Commission.

Sir Alan said: “I welcome the news that OFGEM is going to investigate this matter. I am glad the regulator has acted on my request for an inquiry, but this is just the first stage and it must show it has teeth to back that up. Pensioners and hard working local families across Northumberland cannot afford a 19 per cent price rise — it is obscene when the energy companies are making such huge profits.”
