A volunteer at a Morpeth college and a Lynemouth couple are among those to have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

Alan Nixon, from Ashington, has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his voluntary service to Newbiggin Golf Club and Collingwood School and Media Arts College, in Morpeth.

Plus there are MBEs for Lynemouth couple Michael and Irene Cullen, who are foster carers with Newcastle City Council, for their services to children and families.

Elsewhere, there is also a BEM for Bedlington resident Gleniss McNeal, who is a volunteer for the National Trust, for services to heritage in Northumberland.

Further north, Longframlington’s David Carr, who runs the village shop, and fellow village resident Carole Catchpole, founder of the Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust, have been awarded BEMs too.
