On Saturday, December 3, at 2pm, at St James’s Community Centre, Wellway, Morpeth, the first meeting of a new group for Northumberland refugees will be held, the Northumberland County of Sanctuary.
This group is being set up to welcome refugees and asylum seekers to my home, the county of Northumberland.
This group will not deal with funding or housing, but will instead offer friendship and warmth, bringing us all together through our common humanity. It is entirely optimistic.
The volunteers in the group aim to introduce refugees to the to the culture and hospitality we have here to share with them the positive ways we live our lives.
Britain is a wealthy country, both physically and compassionately, and we can be a real force for good.
County of Sanctuary is a chance to give hope to people who have been through some of the worst of all times and offer the best of our British values.
I would implore anybody interested to come along, get involved and show the best of our common togetherness.
