TOWN councillors have given their backing to a project to remember Morpeth’s contribution to the First World War.
An historian has contacted Morpeth Town Council to seek support for an initiative to commemorate people from the town who died in the war in a new book.
Councillors were keen to support the scheme, but need further information if they are to offer financial backing.
Morpeth Mayor Mark Horton said: “I would support this project, certainly in spirit. If there is money or resources being asked for, we would have to re-consider this.”
Coun David Parker added: “I think we should definitely involve ourselves in this, after all, we are the custodians of the Mafeking Park memorial.”
Coun Andrew Tebbutt said: “I think this is important because the Heritage Lottery Fund will look at its funding. I think it is unlikely that it will get a grant unless there is some evidence that there is other money involved.”
