Angry residents turned out in force to protest at plans for housing and commercial development.

The Morpeth North Residents’ Action Group gathered outside Morpeth Town Hall this evening to show their opposition to an application by the Mitford Estate for hundreds of homes, a hotel, bar, roadside service centre and parkland on greenfield land west of Lancaster Park.

The demonstration was timed to greet councillors arriving for Morpeth Town Council’s Planning and Transport Committee, which is due to discuss the application at its meeting tonight.

Residents will speak at the session, outlining their concerns about potential noise and light disturbance, urban sprawl on the green approaches to Morpeth, development outside the settlement boundary, the impact on town centre businesses and the fact that the site is earmarked to be safeguarded green space in the emerging Morpeth Neighbourhood Plan.

The proposal will ultimately be determined by Northumberland County Council.
