A dedicated husband and wife team who between them have given more than 100 years of voluntary service to the RNLI have been nominated for the Best of Northumberland awards.
Richard and Barbara Martin have been put forward to recognise their commitment to Newbiggin RNLI.
It comes as nominations have started to pour in for this year’s celebration of unsung community heroes who do amazing things.
And the Martins, from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, certainly fit this bill, having given a lifetime of service to the RNLI.
Mr Martin, known as Tim and aged 83, has completed 57 years of voluntary work for Newbiggin Lifeboat.
He was a former lifeboat man and is now boathouse manager. He has sign-written the lifeboat service boards for 34 years. He now makes them, shapes them and paints them black.
The RNLI no longer supplies the boards, as computers keep a record, but Mr Martin feels that the public enjoy reading a true record of services rendered. The lifeboat boards have recorded services since 1851.
Mrs Martin, 82, is the president of Newbiggin Ladies Lifeboat Guild Fund-raising Team and is an active full-time member, enthusiastically raising funds and promoting Newbiggin lifeboat at every opportunity. She has done voluntary work for 52 years.
As part of the Best of Northumberland awards, readers are being encouraged to nominate individuals and groups in the county who go above and beyond the call of duty and/or show incredible strength and courage in the face of adversity. The deadline for entries is Friday, August 19.
Organised by Northeast Press – publishers of the Northumberland Gazette, Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader – and Tweeddale Press’s Berwick Advertiser, the awards are a celebration of bravery, determination, commitment and achievement.
We are looking for people who, in their everyday lives, have managed to do something extraordinary for the benefit of themselves and others.
The awards are split into 13 categories, recognising a cross-section of local heroes.
The categories are Community Group; Community Champion; Student of the Year; Sporting Achievement; Fund-raiser; Child of Achievement; Child of Courage; Green Champion; Role Model; Volunteer; Sports Team; Good Neighbour; and Lifetime Contribution Award.
The winners will be presented with their awards at a ceremony at Linden Hall, Longhorsley, on the evening of Thursday, September 15.
