A SCHEME which encourages firms and organisations to share and share alike is making its mark at the county council.

The new online system called WARPit, waste action reuse portal, enables individual workers to give away or loan unwanted office furniture and equipment to colleagues or to others.

This approach provides an alternative to waste disposal and reduces the need for landfill.

It offers a collaborative approach to recycling and also involves working with charities such as Revive, which is involved in the transportation and restoration of furniture for re-sale for the authority.

Since signing up for a 12-month trial in February, Northumberland County Council has achieved financial savings of £51,000 and saved the environmental equivalent of 38,444KG of CO2, or the planting of 52 trees.
