Sharing the load for sport awards

WORK to revive annual sports awards could be shared out among clubs and sponsors.

The Herald reported earlier this month that Morpeth Town Council had been asked to consider bringing back the Castle Morpeth Sports Awards that fell by the wayside in the reorganisation of local government in 2009.

Members of the council’s Finance and General Purposes Committee were keen to support the initiative, but said they required more information about the likely costs and resources needed for the venture.

And now the authority hopes to tap into the knowledge and experience of those involved in organising previous award ceremonies.

Coun Ken Brown said: “The communications working group has met and looked at the awards and we would like to continue them, but we decided that we need to do it together with all the interested parties, including representatives from other parish councils and who sponsored the awards in the past. Essentially it is trying to create what was the Castle Morpeth Sports Council.

“We will be having a discussion fairly soon on that.”

Any interested parties are welcome to join the discussions with a view to helping organise and manage any future event.
