The 100th edition of Longhirst Show on Saturday was both a celebration of the past and a look to the future.

Organisers say that the first event they have on record dates back to 1915 and took place in Longhirst Hall.

As part of the centenary celebrations, the group scheduled some extra classes this year.

These centenary classes were all themed around things that could only be grown or found 100 years ago.

The sections included any vegetable variety grown at that time as well as any flower variety, an old recipe, a black and white or sepia photograph of the time and any craft item which might have been made 100 years ago.

In terms of looking to the future, show chairman Bob Jackson and secretary Gill Featonby, who have been involved for a number of years, are both standing down at the end of the year.

Show secretary Gill Featonby was best in class with her herbaceous displays.

“We really fell it needs some new blood and new ideas,” Gill said. Referring to this year’s event, she added: “It was a good show. We had a very good turnout of entries and there were lots of people from Micklewood – the new addition to the village – there.

“We managed record takings in the at the auction on Saturday night – nearly £250.”
