HOPES are high that funds for a new skate park in Ponteland will be secured in 2012.
The Ponteland Community Project (PCP) scheme to build the facility next to the refurbished children’s play park in Callerton Lane could have won £50,000 in the North East section of ITV’s The People’s Millions competition in winter 2010, however it lost out at the final stage.
But the youth sub-group has come back with revised plans and a firm price has been agreed with a contractor, which will be held for 12 months.
And its application to the Banks Community Fund for the rest of the required money – thousands of pounds have already been raised – has met the criteria to be considered by the organisation’s grants committee.
The PCP will now submit a formal bid and an independent reference in January.
Matthew Gray, one of the youth sub-group members, said: “The project was standing still for a few months, so it’s great that progress is now being made.
“We’re on the finishing straight and we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
“I would be very disappointed if we didn’t get the funding in 2012, whether it’s from the Banks Community Fund or another source.”
