Morpeth Soroptimists have a new President, Mrs Denise Alcock, who takes over from Mrs Jean Coates.

She said: “My theme for the year is Friendship and Fun, which is what I get from being a Soroptimist.

“This has enabled me to travel and meet people from all walks of life.

“We are very much involved in service to the community, aiming to enhance the lives of women and girls throughout the world whose lives are made intolerable by war, famine, a lack of education, trafficking, sexual abuse, discrimination, and even in this country, internet bullying and pornography.

“We are not a fund-raising organisation, but sometimes giving money is the only way to help.

“We will be researching what facilities are in place for sufferers of endometriosis.

“An ongoing commitment to fund a child in Uganda to an education, and support for Barnabas Safe and Sound and the Talking Newspaper are a sample of the things we do.

“We have a programme of talented speakers and will be having a lot of fun.

“Why don’t you come and join us?”
