Students are smooth operators

PEDAL power paid off for Morpeth students as they scooped a special food lesson.

Pupils at King Edward VI School (KEVI) proved they were smooth operators to come out top in a countywide challenge earlier this year.

As part of Northumberland County Council’s Recycling Week youngsters were invited to jump onto the Real Food Works smoothie bike to see how many fruity drinks they could make from unwanted food, using the bike’s pedalling system to work the blender.

The KEVI group came out top, making an impressive 560 smoothies in three hours.

And the school’s prize was to spend a session with Real Food Works, based around the principles of ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’.

Activities included menu planning using the Food Standard Agency’s Eatwell Plate, finding five uses for the foods people throw away the most, preparing a pudding from leftover cheese and bread and cooking a quick apple crumble and fruity flapjack.

Real Food Works owner David Malone said: “It is crucially important for children to learn cooking skills to help them to enjoy a wide range of healthy food, become independent of fast foods and convenience foods and to elevate their self-esteem and take pride in their work.”

KEVI Head of Health and Social Care Catherine Middleton added: “The students are a proactive group of young people who have worked together to improve aspects linked to healthy eating at the school.”

The event was supported by the council’s waste management team.

County Executive Member for Waste Management Ian Lindley said: “Working with schools in this way is an excellent way of getting the waste message over to young people in their formative years and we hope that they will take it with them into their adult lives.”
