Sylvia Bland, an assistant coach at Morpeth Swimming Club, took the plunge at the weekend when she competed in the World Swimming Association World Cup event, which was held on Lake Windermere, Cumbria.
Sylvia was one of more than 1,000 competitors from all over the world, who participated at the Low Wood Bay resort marina, where the water temperature was a cool 6.5C.
Sylvia entered the 60m, 120m and 240m events, plus a four-person relay. She was up against ice swimmers from Finland, Germany, America and Russia.
But it was all worth it in the end, for she returned with a silver medal after finishing second in her 60m race, and she is pictured above proudly showing it off.
