Was Bessie Surtees a folk heroine? This was asked by Bill Saunders when he spoke to Kirkley WI.
Bessie was born into a family with good connections. Her father was Sheriff of Newcastle. She eloped with John Scott, from a coal merchant’s family. He went on to become Chancellor of England. Bessie’s former home is the northern headquarters of English Heritage. Giving the vote of thanks, Margaret Neil suggested that the house might be an interesting place for members to visit.
Members were thanked for knitting vests for newspaper babies.
