The chips are down

AS celebrations take place for one of the nation’s favourite foods, firefighters are urging people to cook safely.

As part of National Chip Week, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service has issued safety tips for anyone considering cooking their own.

They include: Replace chip pans with an electric fryer, use a thermostat-controlled deep-fat fryer, never fill a chip pan more than a third full, don’t let oil overheat, don’t cook after drinking alcohol, never leave a chip pan unattended and never put chips in a pan if the oil has started smoking.

If a chip pan does catch fire never throw water on it, turn it off if it safe to do so without reaching over the pan, and call the fire service on 999.
