A COLOURFUL crop of poinsettias are leading the way in festive flowers at a Morpeth garden centre.

Heighley Gate Nursery and Garden Centre is thought to be the only grower of the plants in Northumberland.

This year it has red, white, pink, marbled, lemon and glitter varieties, carefully tended by Nursery Manager Nigel Lawton.

He said: “Poinsettias require quite high temperatures so most people have dropped out of growing them because of the high fuel costs, but we have always grown them here.

“We find that because they are British-grown, they tend to last longer and customers like buying plants that have been grown locally.”

An eye-catching Heighley Gate Christmas ad-van will be travelling through the county this weekend, with a festive carnival room on the back. Customers can try to win the contents by entering a draw.
