Thousands of pounds raised at fishing event

Those who took part and were involved in the Fishing for Heroes fund-raising event

Around Â£5,000 was raised at a fly-fishing event, in aid of a military charity which supports veterans suffering from problems relating to active service.

Organised by angler Lucy Bowden, from Alnwick, the event was staged at Thrunton Long Crag Trout Fishery earlier this month.

The fund-raiser attracted 49 anglers, who took part in a friendly fly-fishing competition which, despite the hard fishing conditions, saw 189 fish caught.

Prizes were awarded to the top three participants with the most fish: Paul Snaith, Alec Harvey and Barrie Nicholson. A prize was also given to best junior angler, Reece Dixon.

Among the anglers and marshals, current and ex-members of the Armed Forces were present.

The successful event – the fourth of its kind – helped raise thousands of pounds for Fishing for Heroes, which provides fully-expensed fly-fishing courses as part of a therapy package for veterans who are suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

Lucy said: “Fishing For Heroes is a charity very close to my heart.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to spend time with the men and women who have given so much for us.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has helped to make the day a massive success and, although the final total hasn’t been confirmed yet, we’re looking in the region of £5,000-plus, which is a brilliant result for a one-day event.”
