Traders call for rethink

A FREE parking offer for Morpeth should be reconsidered, councillors have said.

Last week the Herald reported that a county council offer to provide free parking for the last two weekends in February had been withdrawn just hours after the announcement had been approved.

The Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade slammed the council for breaking the deal, which it claimed would have helped struggling businesses to attract customers during the town centre roadworks.

And now members of Morpeth Town Council’s Planning and Transport Committee have spoken out.

Chairman David Parker said: “We are rather surprised that the county council seemed to make an offer of free parking for two Saturdays which it has now withdrawn. I’m rather mystified by that. I propose we write to the county council saying we regret that and ask it to reconsider.”

The proposal was backed by the committee.
