THE traditional village show is blossoming in Longhirst, with around 500 entries submitted.

The event, which is held in Longhirst Village Hall, offers a variety of classes for gardeners, cooks, photographers and artisans to show off their skills.

And this year 33 exhibitors entered 135 classes.

Star of the show was John Hannard, who swept the board in the flower and vegetable sections, winning trophies for Best Leeks, Vegetables and Flowers, as well as 28 individual classes.

His impressive points total also earned him the new Longhirst Parish Trophy for the exhibitor with the highest score in the vegetable and flower classes. Second was show Secretary Gill Featonby and Chairman Bob Jackson was third.

Veggie boxes were made up for the end of show auction, which attracted many bids.

But despite the success, organisers are planning some changes for next year.

Mrs Featonby said: “Entries in the cookery section were again disappointing, with no new exhibitors and the trophy for Best Novice Exhibitor not being awarded this year.

“The committee has already started thinking of ways to encourage new exhibitors and will consider changes in the format of these classes for next year.”
