Wallington is being decorated with 1,000 trees this festive season after staff and volunteers from the National Trust took inspiration from the estate’s previous residents.
Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan and his family, who lived on the estate until 1958, loved trees and nature.
For over a hundred years, it was a family tradition to record the history of the woodland around the house in The Book of Trees.
This Christmas period – from the towering 30ft tree in the courtyard to the tiny ceramic tree in the Hammond Dolls’ House, which is just 1.5 inches tall – Wallington will be looking more festive than ever before for its season of activities and events in December.
The ground floor of the house will be decorated with trees inspired by the different rooms. In the library, for example, the team has put together hand-made trees from the pages of books while in the drawing room, where the family gathered to listen to music, there will be a tree decorated with musical notes.
The cafe and shops will also have special themed decorations, including a cutlery tree and one decorated with teacups, along with tree-shaped paperchains.
In addition, the entrance walkway has been lined with decorated tree branches.
Gillian Mason, visitor experience manager for Wallington, said: “This year, we wanted to put a Trevelyan twist on our Christmas decorations and their passion for trees inspired us to develop a new woodland theme.
“We wanted to see how many trees we could include into our decorating scheme.
“We’re really looking forward to the reactions when people see the biggest tree we’ve ever had in the courtyard and we hope they will enjoy looking out for all the other trees when they visit.
“The whole team has been really inspired by this year’s theme and everyone has enjoyed putting their creativity to the test and thinking of different ways to bring festive trees into their area.
“While they’re not all real Christmas trees, we hope to end up with 1,000 trees all together, so it should be an impressive sight.”
You can experience Christmas in the house at Wallington at special events throughout December, while the walled garden, woodland, cafe and shops will be open daily until December 23.
