A free microchipping service for dogs is being offered by a Morpeth veterinary practice.

Robson and Prescott has teamed up with Dogs Trust to run the offer at its nine branches until the end of March.

The practice has already chipped 1,700 dogs for free at a cost of £26,000 to the business.

The process involves putting a tiny chip into a dog’s loose skin on the back of the neck. It contains a unique code and if the pet is lost or stolen a dog warden, shelter or vet can match the number to the owner’s contact details.

Microchipping dogs will be compulsory from April 2016.

The practice is also offering a discount on microchipping cats, costing £9.98, until the end of March.
