Village memories revived

Kirkley WI

Members of Kirkley WI and their guests listened to a talk and demonstration by Hilary East and Hazel Graham.

They told the history of Cullercoats from 1820. Using songs, poems and paintings by local residents and visitors, they showed the changes which had occurred. They explained the dress of the fisher women and the practical function of each item. To finish, they demonstrated a clog dance.

Claire Oliver thanked Hazel and Hilary for their talk, which had revived childhood memories for some.

The competition for a knitted hat was won by newly-elected President Liz Shaw. Dorothy Wheeler has retired as programme secretary, an important job for which she was thanked. Rosie Creighton and Ann Kelway would be planning future programmes.
