Village’s gardens blooming bright for annual contest

MORE than a dozen green-fingered residents in a Northumberland village have been rewarded for their efforts.

Entries for the third Pegswood in Bloom competition, organised by the parish council, were of an exceptional standard.

The Peter Basnett Award for the Best Overall Entry went to Tom Vasey of Climbing Tree Walk.

Pegswood Parish Council clerk Kevin Cassie said: “Our thanks go to the judges, Margaret Lediard and former parish clerk Peter Basnett, who were impressed by the quality of all the entries.”

The prize winners in the other competition categories were as follows.

Most attractive large garden: 1 Mr T Vasey, 2 Mrs G Kerr (Charles Street), 3 Mr D Turner (Langwell Terrace) commended Mr and Mrs Armstrong (Morpeth Avenue); Most attractive small garden: 1 Mr W Hall (Beaumont Court), 2 Mr J Stappard (Hepscott Walk), 3 Mr N Armstrong (Warkworth Drive), highly commended Mrs M Burley (Cavendish Square), Mrs M Green (Howard Grove), commended Mr and Mrs Armstrong, Mr T Vasey, Mrs I Butler (Castleway); Best container, large basket or window box: 1 Mr D Turner, 2 Mr C H Norvell (Croome Gardens), 3 Mr W Hall, highly commended Mrs M Burley, commended Mr T Vasey, Mr M Scrowther (Charles Street). Best community effort: Mr T Graham (Pegswood Community Hub); Best senior citizen’s garden: 1 Mr T Vasey, 2 Mr J Stappard, 3 Mr D Turner, commended Mr and Mrs Armstrong, Mrs M Burley, Mrs M Green, Mr H Hislop (West View), Mr W Hall, Mrs G Kerr; Best allotment: 1 Mr N Armstrong and Mr H Hislop (joint first).
