A by-election will take place next month in the Morpeth Town Council Stobhill ward after the elections office received the required number of letters from local residents.

The vacancy was created when Rachel Moore resigned from the authority due to ‘work and family commitments’.

Nomination papers must be hand delivered, having booked a prior appointment for doing so, to the elections office at County Hall by 4pm tomorrow. If the by-election is contested, the poll will take place on Thursday, March 17.

Local Conservatives have selected campaigner Johnny Wearmouth to stand for the vacancy.

The successful self-made businessman lives locally with his wife and young family.

He said: “Morpeth is a wonderful place and I want to give something back to the community I love.

“My particular interest is in planning matters. In my professional life I am very familiar with the operation of the planning system and I want to use those skills to help protect the town against over-development.”
