Defeated Liberal Democrat Julie Pörksen says she will continue to campaign against a string of unjust issues in Northumberland, despite losing the battle for the Berwick constituency seat today.

Ms Pörksen was unable to secure control of the area – which has been held by her party for more than 40 years – after finishing second in the election. She took 11,689 votes, falling short of victorious Tory Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who won 16,603 votes.

Speaking after the defeat, the Liberal Democrat candidate said that the race to become MP had been a humbling experience for her.

Before the result, Sir Alan Beith, who held the Berwick seat for more than four decades, but stood down prior to the 2015 General Election, admitted he was shocked at just how badly the Liberal Democrats had fared at the polls, but backed the party to recover.
