The two-year construction period has involved some state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques as well as moving 310,000 cubic metres of soil, creating 9,300 metres of hedgerow, laying down 34,000 tonnes of tarmac and planting 36,000 trees and shrubs.

Coun Ian Swithenbank, cabinet member for local services, said: “This has been a real example of engineering excellence, with some massive logistical issues to overcome, creating bridges and underpasses while working around one of the busiest roads in the country and keeping traffic moving.

“The council has worked closely with the contractors throughout this project and we’re looking forward to residents, commuters and visitors reaping the benefits of this new bypass.”
