A mum who lost her five-week-old daughter to whooping cough can look forward to happier times after winning a wedding competition.

Sales assistant Emma Sharp and her fiance Colin Herdman suffered the heartbreaking loss of their daughter Violet last May.

I’m just over the moon.

But now the Pegswood couple, who have four other children, have a new baby on the way and a wedding to look forward to in July next year.

And they have further cause for joy after the bride-to-be scooped a half-price designer wedding gown in a competition at Kathryn S Trueman bridal shop in Morpeth. Entrants had to explain in 100 words or less why they deserved to win.

Miss Sharp, 34, said: “It’s been a really awful year. We all still miss Violet so much and will never forget her, but the new baby and our wedding next year are giving us something to look forward to.”

As well as the discount, Miss Sharp was presented with flowers, champagne and a £100 voucher.

“I’m just over the moon,” she said.

“When I started looking at dresses I imagined I would go for a vintage style, but I picked something completely different. It was so hard to choose as all the gowns were truly stunning, but the one I’ve chosen is so beautiful. It really is a dream wedding dress.”

Ms Trueman said: “Emma is a very worthy winner and we know she will look and feel gorgeous on her big day.”
