It’s not every day you get a message from the Queen, but that’s just what happened to Winifred Frances as she reached her century.

The former teacher, known as Win, celebrated her 100th birthday at Terravis Park care home last Thursday with Morpeth Mayor Joan Tebbutt and her escort Alison Byard.

Mrs Frances, nee Bowler, spent most of her life in London, where she worked as Deputy Head of Honor Oak Girls’ School. She was a founder member of London Drama, which helps teaching professionals to develop drama in schools, and served as a volunteer for the group until the age of 87.

She moved to Morpeth in 2004 to be closer to family.
