Woman in A1 death crash named

Police have named the 84-year-old woman who died after driving the wrong way down the A1 near Morpeth on Saturday afternoon.

Jennifer Scott, of The Dene, Whitley Bay, crashed into the central reservation on the northbound carriageway near Clifton after colliding with other vehicles.

Police, the fire and ambulance services and air ambulance all attended, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 51-year-old man from another vehicle involved in the crash was airlifted to Newcastle RVI for treatment to chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries.

Today, his condition was described as critical but stable.

A 52-year-old woman passenger in the same car was taken by ambulance to the RVI as well.
