UNUSUAL lots are coming under the hammer at an auction with a difference.

There won’t be an antique or collectable in sight as bidders gather to bag a bargain.

This is Northumberland’s first Firewood Fair – to sell firewood at auction.

The fair will be held on Sunday, October 16, at Meldon Park, near Morpeth.

Organisers Northwoods, the North East woodlands initiative, want forestry and timber businesses from across the county to bring their timber to the market where it will be auctioned to the general public.

They are also looking for wood and timber-related businesses who would benefit from a trade stand at the event.

In Northumberland, there are more than 1,500 employed within the timber industry and it contributes over £40million to the local economy.

The fair is seen as an innovative way to develop a customer base, as well as to create awareness about the timber industry.

The Northumberland Firewood Fair is only the second of its kind in the UK.

Businesses involved in firewood processing equipment, woodland management equipment, wood stoves and boilers and woodland management services are all welcome to bring trade stands.

Ben Tansey, director of Northwoods, is hoping that all involved in the county’s timber industries, will support it.

He said: “Lincolnshire has been running a firewood fair for a few years and it’s gone from strength to strength with last year over 2,000 people attending. To make the Northumberland Firewood Fair a success, we need firewood to sell, so I would like to invite anyone interested in attending to contact us.

“We’ve only just announced the event and already have several wood fuel supply businesses signed up and committed to bring wood to the auction.

“This is a unique opportunity for businesses.

“Through this event we will raise the profile of the timber industry and give businesses the opportunity to meet their customers on a personal face-to-face basis.”

Peter Stenner, from Northumberland’s Woodfuel Barn, is taking his kiln-dried logs to the fair.

He said: “It’s a great chance to meet some new customers. We’re gearing up for a great winter and our business is continuing to grow, so a firewood auction is a great way for our customers to see the care and attention we put into producing your fuel.”
