NEWCASTLE United legend Alan Shearer netted a big tasty treat for a lucky customer at a Ponteland restaurant.

The giant 10kg panettone, an Italian Christmas cake, was created especially for the Fratelli restaurant in Bell Villas so it could be raffled in aid of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

Master bakers in Verona, Italy, worked flat out for two days to create the cake, which is traditionally made from sweet, bread-style dough, mixed with candied fruit and served warm or cold with cream or custard on Christmas Day.

Fratelli’s owners Paul Bernardelli and Fabrizio Saba had arranged for the cake to be made and had it shipped to the UK to take pride of place in the restaurant.

Former England captain Shearer, one of the Foundation’s patrons, went along to pick the winner.

A total of £781 was donated to the charity, which was launched in 2008 to help fund the early detection and treatment of cancer, as well as clinical trials of anti-cancer drugs.

Mr Bernardelli said: “We’ve a long association with The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and enjoy finding ways in which we can support it.

“This cake really was a masterpiece and we hope the lucky winner is thoroughly enjoying every bite.”
