May I throw a little light – pardon the pun – on what has happened to the old High Stanners sewer gas lamp as queried by your correspondent Roger Hawkins.
The lamp has had to be moved because of the flood protection works but it is in safe keeping, is being restored and should be re-sited on the Stanners very shortly as close as possible to its original position.
Greater Morpeth Development Trust is working on this project in conjunction with Morpeth Town Council, the Environment Agency and Northumberland County Council’s conservation team, in order to preserve a unique piece of Morpeth’s history as one of a very small number of Victorian sewer gas lamps still to be found in Britain.
