SIR, — I work in the English department at Sunderland University and I am researching the accents and dialects of the North East of England.
Back in September 2007 you published a letter from me in which I asked for volunteers to take part in a study looking at where people draw their personal dialect boundaries. The response has been excellent (1,600 people in the region volunteered, many of them after reading my original letter in the 'Morpeth Herald'), and my findings are now available online.

Just go to http://drmichaelpearce.blogspot.com/ and click on the map. There you can find out where people think the Geordie/Mackem border lies, where 'Pitmatic' is spoken, where people are deemed to 'drop' their aitches, and plenty more besides. If you would like to comment on the map, e-mail me at mike.pearce@sunderland.ac.uk, or write to the address below.
