Continuing threat to our Post Offices

SIR, — I am writing with regard to the continuing threat to our local Post Offices.
As many people are aware, Northumberland Post Offices are being considered in the Network Closure Programme. What many of our customers may not realise is that even after this programme there is a further threat as the Government considers tenders fo
r the Post Office Card account.

Although Post Office Limited has put in a bid for the business, there is no guarantee that it will win the contract and if lost, a further 3,000 offices could become unviable and close.

More than four million people across the country have these accounts, with many in Northumberland choosing to receive their pensions in this way. Post Offices are well placed in their local communities to provide a service and in many villages are the only banking service available.

I am writing to my local councillors and Denis Murphy MP to urge them to campaign on behalf of my customers and myself, because if the Government fails to award this contract to the Post Office the effects on our local communities would be devastating.

Could I urge your readers who feel that their local Post Office is an asset to their community to join our campaign by either contacting their local councillor, Mr Murphy, or completing a postcard at their local office to keep these accounts with the Post Office?

DAVID FRANKLIN
Sub Postmaster
Pegswood Colliery Post Office
Morpeth
